Judging

THE JUDGING PROCESS

Desire for as fair and transparent a process as possible drove the development of the Judging Process for 2005. In the highly subjective arena of design work, it is crucial for the sake of fairness that particularly opinionated or high profile judges do not become overly influential in the process. Our numerical system, in which votes are cast on an individual basis, eliminates the need for judges to meet or confer with each other until absolutely necessary.

The following levels will be recognised by the judges:
Finalist
Highly Commended
Best of Category
Stringer.
Judging will take place from 11 July to 15 July 2005.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  1. Each discipline (Graphic, Interior and Product) will have its own panel of judges.
  2. Each entry will be judged on the basis of:
    * Originality, creativity, appropriateness, technical innovation, craftsmanship, skill, use of resources and ability to meet the brief.
    * Judges will take special account of how well the design solution meets the requirements of the client and the needs of the end user/viewer.
  3. Entries will be presented to the judges with no marks, symbols, or labels that can readily identify the designer/s.
  4. Finalists will be assessed using all available material accompanying the entry.
  5. The judges reserve the right to relocate an entry from one category to another if they deem it necessary.
  6. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence concerning the results can be entered into.
  7. If judges feel entries in a particular category do not reach an appropriate standard, an award will not be made in that category.
  8. In the likelihood of a category not attracting enough entries, the judges are not required to award a Best of Category.
  9. Where there is a likelihood of conflict of interest in the judging procedure, then that judge will step down from evaluating that entry.
  10. The judges reserve the right to contact the client/referee for examination or clarification of the work entered.
  11. Interior entries are open to site visits where the panel deems it necessary.
  12. Product entries will be judged in two stages.

Round one – Selection of finalists

All round one submissions must be supplied in an electronic email format only. Total email size must not exceed 2mb. Images should be 300dpi minimum. Entrants must provide answers to all the questions in the entry form, and may also supply additional documentation in support of their entry. The judges will individually assess each entrant against the criteria, and will award points on a scale of 1 to 15 to the entry. Judges will provide written comments against each entry for the other judges to review.

At the end of the round one judging period, the results will be collated. The judges will discuss and then agree the cut-off point for finalists.

Finalists will be notified by letter and by email. Finalists will be published on the DINZ website.

Round two – Selection of Highly Commended awards,
Category winners and Stringer

For the purposes of judging all finalists will be required to either supply a sample of the product, or provide access to the product. On the day of judging, entrants will be encouraged to either present their entry or, where this is not possible, to be contactable by phone for the purposes of clarifying any issues that have not been addressed in an entrant’s submission. For each category, the judges will collectively assess the entry against the criteria. By consensus agreement, they will determine those finalists that will be highly commended, those that are the category winner and for the Product category the Stringer winner.
