Clem Devine Clem Devine

Clem Devine was born and bred in Invercargill, a long way from Ponsonby where he now distills world-class design solutions as a member of Alt Group.

Clem graduated from Massey University Wellington in 2002, beginning his best-award-winning career at Eyework. His latest project is learning to hear again after receiving a cochlear implant in January ? unaware the world made SO MUCH noise.

Phil Dunstan-Brown Phil Dunstan-Brown

Phil has been design lead at DNA Wellington for over seven years. He is responsible for the overall creative product and runs a group of highly talented people whose constant drive is to create innovative work that produces results. His mantra is design isn't just about aesthetics and execution, but it's the essential link connecting organisations to people through powerful ideas. It's about being the window in the wall rather than the wallpaper around it.

He has a passion for seeing young people do well in the industry. He takes occasional lectures, mentors individuals through their studies and helps them to work their way into the industry. He recently instigated a intern programme at DNA.

He has been recognised in many award programmes both on and offshore.

Dianne Fuller Dianne Fuller

Dianne is a senior designer at Clemenger BBDO where she has spent the last 10 years of her career. She has been recognised both locally and internationally for her work.

Dianne is an inveterate collector of all things, old and new, she started as a child with a collection of chocolate bar wrappers. This lead to... 1) A fascination with graphics, 2) a recognition of the power of a brand, and 3) the birth of a chocoholic. It is only co-incidence she now lives in Porirua, home to New Zealand's famous Whittakers chocolate.

Steve Martin MDINZ Steve Martin MDINZ

Steve has twelve years of experience in the design industry, the majority of which sits within the online medium. Currently residing as Creative Director of Terabyte, Steve has played a major role in a number of online/digital projects for organisations such as Auckland Museum, Te Papa, Fonterra, Icon Entertainment and HSBC.

His wide range of experience has included working for Conde Nast Publications in the United Kingdom as Art Director for the online sites of British Vogue, GQ, Glamour, CN Traveller, Vanity Fair and undertaking projects for Chanel and Givenchy.

Steve is highly involved with a number of educational institutes helping in the development of online studies including Fellowship awards to promising students.

Steve has also gained recognition in Traditional Animation, Graphic Design and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Communication Design from Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London.

Kris Sowersby Kris Sowersby

Kris Sowersby (BCGD) graduated in two-thousand-and-something from the Wanganui School of Design. After brief employment as a signwriter and graphic designer, Kris has been self-employed since 2005 as Director of Typography for KLIM Typographic Design & The Letterheads Ltd. These two entities represent the two sides to Sowersby's work: typeface design (KLIM) & graphic design (The Letterheads). Both disciplines live in complete symbiosis with one another?the micro surgery of type design informing the macro arrangements of graphic design & vice versa.

Essentially one of the only competent typeface designers working in New Zealand, Sowersby's reputation for typeface design has
led to him working with, and for, contemporary typographic luminaries such as Christian Schwartz, Erik Spiekermann, Chester Jenkins, House Industries, DNA Design and Pentagram.

Jonty Valentine Jonty Valentine

Jonty Valentine currently lives in Auckland, working as a graphic designer, a lecturer and sometimes a writer and curator. He is co-editor of the graphic design journal The National Grid with Luke Wood.

Recent significant projects include: being invited to curate a collection of NZ publications for the exhibition Forms of Enquiry: The Architecture of Critical Graphic Design at London?s Architectural Association School of Architecture; designing the publication Lake of Coal by photographer David Cook; and curating the NZ publication design exhibition Just Hold Me at Auckland?s Objectspace gallery.

Jonty received an MFA in graphic design from Yale University in 2002, and a BFA from the University of Canterbury in 1993. (www.index.org.nz)

Pepijn Zuijderwijk Pepijn Zuijderwijk

With more than 10 years experience in the interactive industry, 35 year old Pep is like a grandad in this business.

As an honours graduate from the Royal College of Art in the Netherlands, he is originally a graphic designer. His passion for moving images led him into an interactive career and designing with Flash gave him the tool for bringing his communication ideas to life.

Andrew Bissett MDINZ Andrew Bissett MDINZ

Andrew graduated with a Diploma of Industrial Design from Carrington Polytechnic in 1986 (Unitec Institute of Technology) and went on to work for Auckland-based Industrial Design Consultancy - Design + Technik.

In October 1995 Andrew co-founded Formworks Product Design; a multi-award-winning consultancy. Under Andrew's Directorship, Formworks has built a reputation based on design innovation and service, both locally and internationally, designing products for companies such as PepsiCo International, Navman, Fonterra Brands, Cadmus, Designline, Hamilton Jet... to name a few. Now the sole owner and Director of Formworks, Andrew is proud of his team of Designers and attributes most of Formworks' success to their dedication and expertise.

Andrew is a past President of the Designers Institute of New Zealand and with twenty-plus years consulting experience under his belt, is keen to help build the growing awareness and importance of design in industry within New Zealand.

David Lovegrove MDINZ David Lovegrove MDINZ

David has been passionately working in the design industry for over 16 years. His design career began with icon New Zealand company Fisher & Paykel, before his overseas experience designing for Swatch Telecom, Phillips, Lucent-Bell Labs and several Formula 1 teams.

In 1999 he founded 4ormfunction, which he has grown into a trans-disciplinary product design studio of industry experts specialising in researching, envisaging, creating and commercialising ideas into successful products for both national and multi-national organizations across a wide spectrum of product categories.

He holds a number of patents, has contributed to many more, serves on a number of Boards as Design Director within start-up technology organisations and is on the DINZ council.

Libby Masterton Libby Masterton

Libby Masterton works on sustainable design and innovation within the Ministry for the Environment?s Sustainable Industry Group. Libby works with other government agencies, businesses, design practitioners, and experts to further sustainable design and innovation within New Zealand.

The Design and Innovation work programme includes promoting and encouraging sustainable product design and helping New Zealand businesses realise market advantage, both at home and overseas, by embracing sustainable design. Work on sustainable design and innovation is part of a wider Ministry for the Environment programme to encourage sustainable business practices across New Zealand.

Rick Wells Rick Wells

Rick is the Chairman of Formway Furniture. He and a partner bought the 12-person, locally-focused company in 1981 and turned it into a global exporting business with over 200 staff by making design central to their business approach.

Rick is also on the Better by Design Advisory Board.

Rick is a member of the Furniture Association of New Zealand and has been involved with the New Zealand Furniture Exporters Group.

Chris Brown MDINZ Chris Brown MDINZ

Chris started out in the design industry 27 years ago working for the architectural division of Lion Breweries. After time travelling and further studies at Otago University, he ended up in Christchurch starting his own practice as an architectural and interior designer. His practice became an affiliate of the Parlante Design Group in early 1993, and the following years have entailed many nationwide projects. His work now includes restaurant and bar refurbishment, new high-end homes, private school work and commercial developments as well as his own product design.

Chris has had a long and active association with the Designers Institute spending many years at council level and finally as president.

His other design focus, with partner Lee, is an Internet-based publication providing interior design information

John Hardwick-Smith John Hardwick-Smith

John Hardwick-Smith is a Wellington-based architect and, for the last 8 years, a Director of Athfield Architects Ltd.

John has been involved in the conceptual design and design coordination of a wide range of architectural, urban design and landscape design projects mainly in Wellington. Often leading or co-leading the process with other design collaborators within Athfield Architects and across other disciplines, John?s work has been recognized by numerous awards, including a Stringer last year for Athfield Architects? collaboration with Dibble Art Studio for the design of the New Zealand Memorial in Hyde Park London

Sue Hudson Sue Hudson

Sue Hudson studied initially as an interior designer and spent several years working in both New Zealand and Australia as a senior designer specialising in commercial and hospitality fitout work.

In the mid-1990s Sue went back to study and completed her architecture degree in Sydney in 2002.

Upon returning to Auckland, Sue took up the role as lecturer within the School of Design at Unitec, and now teaches final year students in the Bachelor of Design (Interior) programme.

Vee Smit Vee Smit

Vee established Space Studio/Designation in 2002 after designing interiors within an architectural practice, with the belief that Interior Design needs to be considered in its own right. Today Space Studio is an award winning interior design company.

A Bachelor of Business Science followed by a Diploma of Interior Design coupled with 22 years work experience in the United States and New Zealand have established Vee as a leading designer in New Zealand.

Vee has extensive experience with retail, hotel, commercial and cinema design, specializing in space planning, conceptual design, design development and delivery of complex interiors. She leads a diversely experienced team of designers, documenters and a procurement team delivering interiors in New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific region and the United Arab Emirate states.

Andrew Tu'inukuafe Andrew Tu'inukuafe

Andrew is a Design Director of Creative Spaces with responsibility for their interiors teams in Auckland and Wellington and is an architect with 15 years experience in workplace design and commercial architecture. He is a graduate of the University of Auckland and Architectural Association, London and his international experience includes working in the US and UK.

His passions include basketball, playing his new black Gibson Les Paul guitar, and spending as much time as possible with his wife and identical triplet sons.
